For any expats out in Singapore, Penang is a wonderful place to visit over a weekend on the cheap. It is only an hour away from Changi, so its perfect for a Friday night, or Saturday morning flight. Below are some of the highlights from a quick one night visit late in 2016.
Explore Armenian Street
Armenian street is full of quirky shops selling knick knacks, and delicious treats. Its also well known for its street art displays, you just need to look for it!
For about $20 you can also rent a two seater bike thing to ride around the streets, in search for street art to snap for instagram 🙂
Caffe Hanakomichi was a nice iced coffee shop that we dropped by in. Highly recommended!
Little Penang Street Market (Sundays)
The Little Penang street market is open only on the last Sunday of the month from 10 – 5PM. It sells things geared not only to tourists, but locals, as well as having a nice selection of street food (we had Laksa, fresh coconut, and melonpan bread). Not a huge market compared to much of south east asia, but its worth a visit if you are in the area.
Note – Grab/Uber is so cheap in Malaysia that you might as well take private cars for anywhere you need to go. All trips were no more than 10 Ringgit (about $3 AUD).
Eat and Keep Eating
Coupled with the fact that Uber/Grab is so cheap and convenient, go out and seek that restaurants that the locals eat at. One of them is Teksen, a chinese restaurant in Georgetown. Double fried pork, and fish curry for days!
Take the cable car up here for great scenic views of Penang. There’s also street stalls up here, as well as delicious food, bars and fruit shops at the top. Try to go on a weekday as it gets ridiculously crowded on the weekends.
