Qantas QF83 Business Class Review – Sydney to Singapore
I was meant to arrive in Singapore after a 2 week break in Sydney on New Years Eve afternoon. We had planned this so that if we felt up for it, we could go checkout the fireworks from Padang where they have cheap $5 beers and movies on the big screen while you count down till midnight. However Qantas decided to have my flight arrive at exactly 11:55PM.
As compensation, they offered me the chance to bid for business class tickets for the return leg. Naturally this was because no one in their right mind would want to be on a plane when the fireworks are all going off (in both countries as well!). So I put in the minimum bid of $500 for each ticket and managed to secure the seats.
In the past I’ve only flown on Singapore Airlines for business class, and that in its own right sets an incredibly high benchmark. In summary
Food: Very tasty meals that you can actually taste at that altitude.
The starter was this really sorry looking salad, but the bread and butter was tasty
Salmon with steamed broccoli and polenta.
Tomato soup. Tastes better than it looks 🙂
Tasting plate with hummus, roasted vegetables and pita
Roast pork with corn puree. This was fantastic!
Service: Just okay. The service you get on Economy Singapore Airlines is better than business Qantas. You know that feeling when the flight attendant is super chummy with the people right in front of you, then they get to you and you get a deadpan service? In this case, they just looked at me and said nothing, so i grabbed an orange juice and didn’t say anything back. Sometimes i think that theres a racial element to it because im asian, or a “you don’t look old enough to fly business” reaction. Maybe a bit of both mixed in?
Entertainment: Feels like a smaller catalogue than SQ. But you get the latest movies including the Marvel stuff.
Accessories: Unlike SQ, you get an amenities bag with some useful lotions for your trip. I didn’t try the headphones but they looked decent. No newspapers or magazines to read though.
Lounge: The Qantas lounge sucks because the food is terrible. Save yourself the experience and go straight to Emirates for good food and drinks.
On the service side, we sat next to the lead singer from Spiderbait, and the flight attendant was getting real chummy with him 🙂
